Nature is the Best Medicine
At this time of year, many of us may find ourselves cooped up inside. While most of us would rather hold off going outside till the warmer weather arrives (which is super unpredictable), it is fundamental that we go outside this winter.
Going for a quick 15-minute walk can allow you to experience a clearer mind and less stress throughout the day. Nature works wonders in terms of improving our physical and mental health. One of the most effective things you can do for your health this winter is to go outside.
As humans, we are meant to be exposed to sunlight, allowing us to experience feelings of wellbeing and feel energized. John Sharp, M.D., a clinical psychiatrist, explains that staying inside for too long can throw off your circadian rhythms, impacting your sleep/wake cycles, mood, digestion, and more.
There are so many reasons why we should be going outside this winter. I’ll also name a few:
#1 Increases Vitamin D
Vitamin D plays various roles in maintaining your health as it reduces the risk of getting cancer, improves mood, and more. The sunlight provides us this natural vitamin and therefore, getting outside this winter is essential to maintain our Vitamin D intake.
#2 Improves Mood
When you go outside, you will experience increases in serotonin. Serotonin, otherwise known as the “feel-good” chemical, can alleviate symptoms of depression.
#3 Reduces Stress
Connecting with nature and allowing ourselves to be mindful of the environment around us can significantly reduce our stress levels.
#4 Sharpens Thinking
“A study from the University of Michigan showed that interacting with nature improves cognitive function no matter the weather. Participants in the study increased their memory performance and attention spans by more than 20% after just an hour of interacting with nature” (Eartheasy.com). So, go outside for a clearer mind!
#5 Increases Energy
Spending time outside allows for increased energy levels as a result of Vitamin D, stress relief, and cleaner air. The indoors can cause us to feel sluggish so going outside can allow us to feel more energized and ready to conquer our goals!
Get off the couch, layer up, and get outside this winter.
