4 New Years Resolutions to Augment Your Health Journey
As we enter into the new year, many of us may find ourselves wanting to crush a health-related resolution in 2021. What I have learned over the years is that many people make their new year's resolutions or goals in general too complicated. Here I will share with you four simple, yet essential, new year’s resolutions to augment your health journey:
#1 Move Your Body 150 Minutes Per Week
The World Health Organization recommends that “adults aged 18–64 should do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity throughout the week or do at least 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity throughout the week or an equivalent combination of moderate - and vigorous-intensity activity.”
Simply put, you need to move your body for a minimum of 150 minutes every single week. The key to mastering this goal is to do something you enjoy. If you like running, run! If you like lifting weights, lift weights! If you like walking, walk! Exercise should not be something you dread doing, rather it should make you feel happy and energized.
#2 Drink More H2O
Did you know that your body is 70% water? Drinking water is essential to maintain “electrolyte balance and blood pressure, lubricating joints, regulating body temperature, and promoting cell health” (Healthline).
Generally, it is recommended that you need to drink at least 8 cups of water per day, but this may vary based on bodily needs or if you frequently exercise. You can achieve this goal by:
Drinking a glass of water before and during a meal
Always having a water bottle with you
Set phone reminders or download a water tracking app (there are lots in the app store!)
#3 Develop a Morning Routine...Without a Screen
The first thing we often do in the morning is stare at our screen. For the first hour of every day, I challenge you to not look at your screen(s). Looking at screens causes our brains to be overstimulated, increasing anxiety and stress. Setting the tone for your day is essential to achieve what you want, and screens can prevent us from doing so. In the morning, implement new habits suchs as meditation, reading, or writing...anything that does not involve a screen. You will enter your day feeling energized and less reliant on your screens.
#4 Food is Your Fuel
I don’t believe in dieting but I do believe that food is fuel. Of course, snack on the chips or candy or your favourite treat when you want to, but your body craves nutrients. This year, I don’t want you to “cut” anything out of your diet. Instead, I want you to add more greens, fats, and proteins to your plate when you can.
These four simple yet effective health goals will allow you to conquer 2021.
